Maths questions

In Mr. Shaw's math group we have been learning about 24 hour time and how to convert AM/PM.

Today we had to make a math question about 24 hour time and movies. And then once we have made that we had to share it with someone we don't usually go with and see if they can figure the question.

Maths blog post

 Hello bloggers,

This weeks blog post will be about Maths (as you can see by the title)

In Mr shaw's math group we have been working on the probability of coins, and the patterns we can get out of flipping coins.

For maths, we had to make an animation!

Here's mine:

Children's book

Hello bloggers

This weeks blog post will be about what I have been doing for literacy, maths, and rocket inquiry

Literacy:

For a few weeks, Mr. Shaw's literacy group has been working on children's books, I haven't yet finished mine but it's close to being finished.
Here is the plan for my book:

Page 1:

(narrator speaking:)

“Once upon a time, there were some sheep on a farm that had a VERY big problem, a problem that left one sheep to overfeed and the rest went hungry…”

Page 2:

“Munch, munch, munch,” said Billy “all of the food for me but no food for you baaaaa”

“But, why won’t you share the food with the rest of us Billy?” asked Harold “sharing is caring” added Cindy

“Because I’m the oldest!” Billy snapped back “I'm older and you’re not so that makes me better than you so, I should get more food!”

Page 3:

“I trade you a piece of grass stuck in between my mouth for 30 straws of hay”

“I'll trade you gold for 500 straws of hay!”

“NO, those are ALL bad trades!! My trade is even better! I'll trade you a whole lot of water for a whole lot of hay”

“I’ll trade you nothing for all of the hay”

“NO, NO, NO, AND NO, as I said I’M THE OLDEST SO I GET ALL OF THE FOOD!”

Page 4:

“Hmph, fine we’ll find a different way to get food then!”

“Good luck, you won’t get very much though”

Page 5:

For a few days, the nice sheep went hungry, then later that night the nice sheep came up with a fancy plan to steal all of the food from Billy to make billy know how it feels to go hungry.

Page 6:

The plan is that while Billy is asleep the sheep would sneak past him and eat all of the food and when Billy woke up he would see that the rest of the sheep were well feed all except for billy

Page 7:

“ZzZzZzZZzZzZzZ, mmmm, wait, where did all my food go?” asked Billy

“We ate it all,” replied Harold

“B-bu-but that's not fair! that's my food!”

“But it wasn't fair when you wouldn’t share the food with the rest of us” Replied Cindy

“Umm, yes it was! I'm the oldest so I get the food, you sheep are the youngest so you just get to eat, dirty grass!”

Page 8:

“Well, we are not giving any food until you say sorry for not sharing AND promise to share the hay with the rest of us.” Replied Harold

“I'll make you a few offers:

“I’ll trade you a piece of grass stuck in between my mouth for 30 straws of hay

I'll trade you gold for 500 straws of hay!”

“NO!”

“I'll trade you a whole lot of water for a whole lot of hay”

“NO!”

“I’ll trade you nothing for all of the hay”

“NO, NO, NO, AND DEFINITELY NO, as we all said, we are not giving you any food until you promise to share the food with the rest of us and say sorry for not sharing the food with us,” Mellisa said

“Hmph, I’ll find a different way to get food then!”

Page 9:

After awhile Billy's tummy started to rumble, he was getting VERY hungry.

After a few hours, his tummy started to rumble again! So Billy said:

“Since the mean sheep won’t share with me, I’ll go find some other food, it's not that hard!

So off billy went to go find some other food

Page 10:

“This grass looks very green and tasty, I think I can eat this!”

So Billy ate the grass and…

“YUCKY, this grass is too dry!”

So off billy went to find some other food

“This flower looks very colorful and tasty, I think I can eat this!”

So Billy ate the flower and…

“YUCKY, this flower is to bitter”

Im still working on it but it will hopefully be finished soon

Southern lights/the matariki

Hello readers,

Today's blog post will be about the southern lights and the Matariki

In Toroa we have been learning about the southern lights and the Matariki.

Today we all did an art piece that represents the Matariki and the southern lights - before that we all had to work on creating a book, animation, puppet show of facts about the Matariki, and how and where to find them.

I decided to use a book creator to explain the Matariki, my book explains:

  • The story of the Matariki

  • Ways to celebrate the Matariki with your family

  • Matariki star facts

  • A drawing of the Matariki (drawn by me!)

  • And a special surprise at the end...hehe

Below is a link to my book so you can read it for yourself!:

The southern lights/the Aurora

Hello readers - again…

The second part of this blog post is going to be about the southern lights/the Aurora

I have learned/found some interesting facts about the southern lights/the aurora:

  • In the southern hemisphere, the southern lights are also known as aurora australis.

  • Most southern light shows occur during the southern hemisphere fall and winter months, which go from March through to September.

  • The Cree called them the ‘Dance of the Spirits’

  • In Finland, they said the lights were caused by the firefox running so quickly the snow that his tail sent sparks into the sky

  • Ancient Chinese observers believed that the Southern lights/the Aurora were the flames of good and evil dragons battling in the heavens

  • Even today, these mysterious and unpredictable lights are called ‘Arura after the Roman goddess of the dawn.

  • An aurora, also know as a polar light, is a display of lights in the sky in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, in an area known as the auroral zone. An aurora around the north pole is called ‘Aurora Borealis’ or the northern lights

  • The southern lights last anywhere from 10 minutes to all night long, depending on the magnitude of the incoming solar wind.

Today in Toroa we created an art piece of the southern lights/the aurora - Down below is a photo of my creation:

The steps on how to make this are quite easy!

If you want to make your own follow these instructions:

1. Hold your plain A4 paper landscape and rip a mountain-like shape across it. This will be used to mask off the hills - Mask this onto the bottom of your black piece of paper.

2.  Then dip your toothbrush into some of the white acrylic paint, then run your fingers through the bristles of the toothbrush to flick paint over your black piece of paper. This will create the background stars.

3.  While the stars are drying, use your ripped card and color the top ripped edge of it in with your different colored pastels. Make sure you change the color every few centimeters.

4.  When the paint is dry, place the chalked paper onto your black paper. Now run your finger through the chalk upwards towards the stars. This should smudge the colored chalk from the plain paper onto your picture.

5.  Mix a small amount of yellow and white together. Make sure you use more white than yellow, you want it to only have a tint of yellow in it.  Using your toothpick or the end of a paintbrush dot in the Matariki constellation.

6.  Remove the paper from the black paper and walla!

Your finishing touch should look something like this:

Hope you have a great school holidays bloggers! - what are you doing these holidays??

Bai for now!

My mixed blog post

Hey bloggers,
Today's blog post will be about the Matariki facts, some things we might do now at Matariki, and what happens at Matariki?

Here are some facts that I know or found out:
  • Matariki has MANY names around the world

  • There are 9 stars of the Matariki

  • The 9 stars are known as the Pleiades

  •   Hiwa-i-te-Rangi - the youngest wishing star

  • The first modern-day Matariki celebrations to place in Hawkins bay in 2000

  • Around 500 people went tot he first Matariki festival but by 2003 the numbers had risen to 15,000 people

  • The reappearance of the seven Matariki stars, in late May or early June, signals the beginning of the Māori New Year

  • Matariki is one of the star clusters nearest to Earth.

  • Matariki – signifies reflection, hope and our connection to the environment

  • Pōhutukawa – connects with those who have passed on

  • Waitī – ties to bodies of freshwater and the food within it

  • Waitā – ties to the ocean and the food within it

  • Waipuna-ā-range – associated with the rain

  • Tupuānuku – is for food that grows within the soil

  • Tupuārangi – is for food that grows up in the trees

  • Turangi – is the star associated with the winds

  • Hiwa-i-te-Rangi – the youngest, is the wishing star that also ties into our aspirations for the coming year

Here are things that I found out that people do when the Matariki come:

  • Have a celebration with friends and whānau.

  • Learn or do some weaving.

  • Learn about stars and see Matariki through a telescope.

  • Talk to people in our family about our family history and stories.

  • Fly kites.

  • Watch kapa haka performances.

  • Learn about Māori origin stories and culture.

  • Give respect to the Whenua (land) on which we live.

  • Learn more about how we can care for our Mother Earth Papatūānuku

Here are some more things that happen when the Matariki come:

  • Finish storing up food for the winter.

  • Create new woven clothes and baskets.

  • Remember our ancestors and listen to old tribal stories.

  • Learn about the natural world.

  • Learn to play string games.

  • Celebrate the coming year.

  • Make, decorate, and fly kites.

Ways to celebrate Matariki:

  • Cook with the traditional Maori vegetables

  • Explore the outdoors

  • Spend some time with kids/family in the kitchens

  • Set exercise goals

  • Get involved

The best time/place to see the Matariki is:

From early June, before sunrise, look to the north-east horizon.

Binary and ASCII

On Wednesday we are learning about Binary and ASCII.

(I haven't yet finished mine, but I'll make it)

Binary is a number system that uses 1’s and 0’s to represent all of our normal set of numbers.  You can use the place values as multiples of 2 to work out how to do it for yourself!  Try watching this video to give it a go yourself!

ASCII is a set of encoded symbols that a computer uses to turn Binary into letters and other symbols from the English language (like what is on our keyboard).  I turned my initials into binary numbers, and then turned those binary numbers into an ASCII code!  Using colors to represent the 1’s and 0’s, my initials in ASCII can be represented by the pattern you see in my image below!

(even though it's not in a necklace yet I will still make it into one soon)
What do you think?

Have you ever tried encoding anything in binary or ASCII?

Could you have a try for yourself?

Can you work out how to write my initials in ASCII from the pattern above?

Anyway bloggers,

See you next time!

Camping ;)

Last weekend me, my mum, and my little brother stayed at a family friend's house todo camping and it was sooooooo FUN!

We stayed in a tent:

We toasted marshmallows:

My marshmallow caught on fire a couple of times though :(
...
And burnt.
...................................................
:/
so I just chucked it on the ground.
We also:
  • Watched movies - well I was the only one watching the movies :/
  • We played with the cat (coco) - but my little brother and the family friends daughter were chasing the poor cat around with a stick and coco kept hiding under the couch until she knew it was 'safe' to come out but each time coco would the kids instantly grabbed the stick and started chasing coco around again. :( poor cat
  • Played games
  • also, I didn't sleep in the tent because it was WAY too cold and I felt sick
Anyway please give me some feedback to make my blog better or/and you can give me ideas on what to blog next time!

Bye-Bye, see you next time!

Koru art!

Hello readers,
Today I will be posting about my koru art ;)

This is my koru design:

It took me a while to figure out what to do/draw because art is not my strong suit (and personally I don't really like art that much.)

I had to look at a few websites for inspiration but some of my friends help me with inspiration.
Some parts where hard to draw/color in with the pastels.
Probably the hardest part of doing the koru art would be when I had to kinda mix the colors together.
One of my least favorite parts would be when I had to use the pastels because I got a little bit dirty

Anyway, thank you for reading my blog post!
Comment if you have any ideas for my next blog post or if you have some feedback as I want to make my blog posts the best that they could every be!
Bye :)

Surprising my sister Grace

Hi guys :)
Are you exited for school to start tomorrow because I am!

And also next week on Friday i'm going to wellington to surprise my sisters Jasmine (who is almost 11) and Grace (who is 6 turning 7)
Can you give me some my ideas on how to surprise them??

I already have some ideas - I could...

Hide in a box and then when grace opens it she'll see me inside

I could...

Call them on Skype and then i'll make it so they can obviously see that i'm in Jasmines room or Graces room or somewhere in there house

I could...

Hide in a place where they would go and then pop out when they come in

I could...

Do/make a clue trail and then when they go find the last clue i'll be there

(Only my sister, my mum, my dad, my step mum and I know about this)

The reason why i'm going there to surprise them is...

It's Graces birthday and I haven't seen my dad, my step mum, Jasmine or Grace for a while.
I was meant to go and see them like a week and a bit after my birthday because we were gonna go to Australia but then my dad cancelled it because he was worried that we might have to book and early trip back to new Zealand so we didn't go on that trip...

Please tell me if you have some ideas on how to surprise them.
I will try and take a video of how I surprise them and what there reactions are gonna be.
What do you think is gonna happen??

See you next time :)
Bai!

Another reading blog post

So after finishing yesterdays book that I read (the worlds worst children) I started reading the second book of the worlds worst children (the worlds worst children 2) the first one was really fun to read.

I wonder if i'm in the second book...

The characters are...

- Humbert - Humbert is probably the most hungriest baby alive and probably with be the hungriest baby that has EVER LIVED (the baby got so big he ended up going though a wall!)

- Stacey - By the age of 10 she thought that she would be the best and biggest star that ever lived!

So far I've only got to page 63, and i'm finding it pretty good so far.

But when I looked at the characters some of them started to sound A LOT like me.

These are the characters that sound like me:

- Fussy Frankie - I guess he is very fussy

- No No Noe - I think she says no a lot

- Cruel Clarissa - By the name I think that she may be cruel...

The rest aren't really like me...

I mean Harry is a kinda

- Harry -  Who NEVER, EVER did his home work

Ps. If a teacher is reading this I do my homework..most of the time...

So far I rate this book 5 1/2 out of 10 and that's because i haven't read a lot of it yet.

Thank you for reading my blog!

How is your day going?
What have you done today?
What is your most favorite book to read?
What did you think of my blog post?
If you can could you give me some feedback to make my blog post even better.

Bye Bye!

I think that they are really good books to read. And they are written by David Williams (one of my most favorite authors)

I read the first book of the worlds worst children

there is 3 the of the worlds worst children books and 1 of the worst worst teachers.

And the characters in the first book are:

- Dribbling drew - Drew dribbles EVERYWHERE and is extremely LAZY
- Miss Petula - Petula can't stop moving (secretly she can but she leaves it to the last day to tell the teachers)
- Bertha - blames every ting on her brother, for example she would hurt herself and then blame it on her brother so she would get his desert
- Nigel - is also know at nit boy, this boy LOVED having nits in is hair. And he would NEVER take a shower or a bath or wash his hair.
- Peter - Peter loves to pick his nose, when he found out that someone made a world record for the biggest ball of boogers he wanted to beat that world record and it turned out to be a DISASTER!
- Windy Mindy - Windy Mindy liked to fart A LOT
- Grubby Gertrude - her room was always a pigsty (just like mine)
- Earnest - never liked to smile he hadn't smiled in 12 YEARS!!!!!!
- Sofia - also know as sofa all she did was sit on the sofa all day everyday she literally sank in to the couch and then ended up being sent to the hospital to get removed from inside of the couch
- Brian Wong -  was never EVER wrong EVER

I  would rate this book 8 1/2 out of 10

Thank you for reading my blog post!
Hows your day going?
what book/s have you read of what book/s  are you reading and what would you rate them out of 10?
